THE WHY & WHATNOT:
Time became such a limited resource at art school that I thought it necessary to abandon reading altogether (something that had been very important to me up until that point). I couldn’t. Instead, I abandoned the novel for a couple of years. Moved onto the staccato rhythm of short stories which could be devoured quickly enough between bouts spent tracing typographic letterforms; endlessly capturing the one minute movements of figure models. In the decade since graduating, I’ve traded ligatures for tenon joints; the proportions of the page for the proportions of an armchair.
But reading has remained a constant. And no matter what form design has taken in my life, it’s always been the narrative behind the pieces I work with, the studios I work for, that has kept me fulfilled. And so, I present to you an ongoing exploration of those narratives: a newsletter where I’ll expound upon the overlaps between what I’m reading and what I’m seeing. Subscribe to find Design in Verse in your inbox absolutely no more than once a month!
It will be pretty. It will be significantly less melodramatic than this introduction email. And, much like a short story, it’s not a big commitment. I’d love for you to read along.
